First, Tell Dormant Grass From Dead Grass

Try the tug test in several brown areas. Grasp a small handful of grass near the soil and pull gently. Grass that remains anchored may still have viable roots and crowns. A firm, pale or greenish crown is encouraging; a brittle, dark crown is not.
