You may find matted grass, bare patches along walkways, gray or pink rings, or turf that looks dormant long after neighboring lawns have started to green. Knowing how to repair winter lawn damage starts with identifying what happened before adding seed, fertilizer, or water. A careful spring recovery plan is more effective than throwing every lawn product at the problem. The goal is to wake up healthy turf, correct the conditions that caused the decline, and reseed only where the lawn truly needs it.
Start With a Close Spring Inspection
Wait until the lawn has thawed and the surface is reasonably dry before walking it closely. Repeated foot traffic on wet, soft soil can compact the ground and pull up grass crowns that are just beginning to recover. Rake away branches, gravel, pet waste, and heavy mats of dead grass, but do not aggressively rake green shoots.
Look at the pattern of the damage. Uniform browning across the lawn often points to winter desiccation, especially on exposed sites where cold wind and bright sun pull moisture from grass blades while the soil is frozen. Dead strips near a driveway or sidewalk may be salt injury or damage from piled snow. Circular, straw-colored patches that appear after snowmelt can indicate snow mold. Thin areas in high-traffic zones may simply be compacted soil combined with winter wear.
To check whether grass is alive, gently tug on a few brown plants. Grass that remains firmly rooted and has a pale green or white crown near the soil line may recover with warmth and moisture. Turf that lifts easily, has brown crowns, or exposes bare soil is a better candidate for reseeding.
Address the Cause Before Repairing Winter Lawn Damage
The best repair depends on the problem. A lawn suffering from dry winter winds needs a different response than one damaged by snow mold or poor drainage.
For snow mold and matted turf
Snow mold is most likely where snow sat for an extended period over long grass, leaves, or other debris. Lightly rake the affected area once it is dry enough to separate the matted blades and improve airflow. Most established turf will grow out of minor snow mold damage without fungicide. Avoid heavy nitrogen applications early, since forcing fast, soft growth can create more stress than benefit.
If the patch remains bare after the lawn begins active growth, loosen the surface, add a light layer of quality compost or screened topsoil, and overseed with a grass blend suited to Central Oregon conditions.
For winter desiccation
Winter desiccation is common on open, windy properties and south- or west-facing exposures. The grass may look tan or gray-green, particularly along fence lines and edges where snow did not linger. Start with deep, even irrigation once nighttime temperatures are reliably above freezing and the soil can accept water. Sandy Central Oregon soils drain quickly, so a long soaking is usually more useful than frequent light sprinkling.

Salt damage often appears in narrow bands beside paved surfaces. Flush the area thoroughly with water to move salts below the root zone, provided the soil drains well. If the soil is compacted, aeration and organic matter can help restore infiltration before reseeding.
Pet urine damage tends to form smaller, irregular spots, sometimes with a dark green ring around the edge. Watering the spot soon after use is the most reliable prevention. For old spots, remove dead material, loosen the top inch of soil, add compost, and reseed. There is no need to apply a long list of corrective products when water, soil preparation, and appropriate seed will do the job.
Rake, Aerate, or Power Rake Only as Needed
Spring cleanup should improve soil contact and airflow, not strip a lawn bare. A leaf rake is enough for light debris and matted grass. If thatch is thick enough that water runs off or seed cannot reach soil, a power rake may be useful. However, power raking a thin, drought-stressed lawn too aggressively can remove living crowns and leave more bare ground than you started with.
Aeration is often the better choice for lawns with hard soil, heavy traffic, standing water, or weak root development. Core aeration opens channels for air, water, and nutrients while creating ideal pockets for overseeding. It is especially valuable in lawns built on compacted construction soil, even when the property’s native soil is sandy.

Repair Bare Spots With Seed and Better Soil
Bare areas need good seed-to-soil contact, steady moisture, and a grass variety that belongs in the site. Scratch up the top 1 to 2 inches of soil with a rake or cultivator. Remove loose dead material, then work in a modest amount of compost or a locally appropriate soil amendment. This improves moisture retention and soil biology without burying the surrounding turf under a heavy layer.

Feed Recovery Without Pushing Excess Growth

This supports root development and gradual green-up instead of a short burst of growth that increases mowing and water demand.
If a soil test shows low organic matter, nutrient imbalance, or a pH issue, address that information rather than guessing. Cool spring weather means your lawn needs less water than it will in July, but new seed needs more consistent surface moisture than established turf.
